A pragmatic vision for mental health!

I am delighted that the Sixth National Conference of WAPR-IC is being held at Chandigarh in May 2019, steered by the astute leadership of Prof. B.S. Chavan, Prof. Nitin Gupta and their team. As a psychiatrist with a special interest in psycho-social rehabilitation, I am gratified to note that the theme of the conference is "Indigenous and Pragmatic Models for Rehabilitation: Focus for the Future."

As every mental health professional knows, mental disability is never self-contained. Mental disability not only affects the person per se but also impacts the family, community and the nation.

As we are aware, the Indian chapter of World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR-IC) was started in 1989 by Dr. M. Sarada Menon, who needs no introduction. Over the years, WAPR has emerged as a unique platform—the only one of its kind—where various professionals in the eld of mental health such as psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers and occupational therapists converge as they attempt to explore pragmatic solutions in the treatment and rehabilitation of people with mental disabilities.

The WAPR has been consistently committed in its efforts to provide scientic updates for professionals in the eld of mental health. In the last two years, the WAPR-IC has successfully organized national conferences in Madurai and Tirupati. Over the years, this conference has become a much sought-after platform for mental health professionals to showcase their work with a signicant increase in the research papers presented at the conference.

On behalf of WAPR-IC, I extend a cordial welcome to all mental health professionals for a memorable and enriching experience.

With Best Regards

Dr. C. Ramasubramanian
